My journaling system for the 1000 days

Alongside a small roadmap app I built and the videos, I wanted to have something on paper too. So I bought myself an A5 book from Dingbats, with a wolf on the cover (my favorite animal). This is where my complete journaling for the 1000 days is supposed to happen. One book probably won't be enough either, so I'll just buy the same one again once it's full. So the whole thing doesn't just turn into a stack of loose pages, I thought beforehand about what the structure should actually look like.

The goal hierarchy

At the start there was one question: how do I stop my daily page from eventually running into nothing, because it isn't tied to anything bigger? The answer was a clear structure from top to bottom:

The point here: every level pays into the one above it. The daily page is no longer just loose checkboxes, it's tied to the weekly goal, the weekly goal to the monthly goal, the monthly goal to the vision. That way even a small day doesn't feel arbitrary.

The monthly goal page

Once a month, ideally right at the start, there's a dedicated page. It contains: the month and number, for example "Month 1, August 2026", plus one concrete goal per pillar (health, learning, creativity, career, personal growth). Then an overarching focus theme for the month, the answer to the question "What do I want to focus on most this month?". At the very bottom a small field: "Why does this matter to me?", tied back to the vision, so the goals don't feel arbitrary but visibly pay into something bigger.

The weekly goal page

One page per week, matching the Sunday reset. On it: week number and date, three to five concrete weekly goals, derived from the monthly goals, plus one non-negotiable priority for the week, the one thing that has to happen no matter what else is going on. Then on Friday or Sunday, a review field follows: achieved, yes or no, plus a short note.

The daily page

At the very bottom of the chain, but still not the least important level: the daily page. It stays deliberately simple, with the top to-do of the day and space to write, about the day, whether it went well, what's been on my mind, and whatever else was going through my head.

August 2026 as the first monthly goal page

August is my start and first real month, so it gets the first monthly goal page in the book. Concretely that means: "Month 1, August 2026", starting on 08/22. Even though the month only has about ten days of challenge time, I'm deliberately setting the goals per pillar smaller and more realistic than in later months. The focus theme for this first month: settling into the routine, instead of big leaps. On top of that come one or two weekly goal pages for the remaining August weeks after the start.

Vision, monthly goal, weekly goal, daily checkmark, a chain that will hopefully hold even when the motivation is long gone.
